What is Manual Handling?

“… any transporting or supporting of a load (including the lifting, putting down, pushing, pulling, carrying or moving thereof) by hand or bodily force”. The load can be an object, person or animal.

Manual handling causes over a third of all workplace injuries. These include work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) such as pain and injuries to arms, legs and joints, and repetitive strain injuries of various sorts.

Manual handling injuries can have serious implications for the employer and the person who has been injured.  Employers have a legal obligation under the MHOR to make a sufficient and suitable assessment of the risk to employees from the manual handling of loads.

Our online Manual Handling course outlines exactly what constitutes as manual handling and covers the regulations and legislations that apply to manual handling tasks. It then goes on to cover safe handling techniques and how to develop good habits in relation to manual handling. It finishes off by introducing some practical solutions and the use of mechanical aids.

Please note that this is an awareness course only.
