If you are involved in dealing with dangerous goods e.g packing or transporting, you will need to make sure they are classified correctly so that all companies and organisations involved are aware of what the hazard is. The person/business shipping the goods is responsible for this.
The different classifications of dangerous goods are listed below;
Class 1 – Explosive
Class 2 – Flammable Gas, Non Flammable, Non Toxic Gas, Toxic Gas.
Class 3 – Flammable Liquid
Class 4 – Flammable Solid, Spontaneously Combustible Substance, Substance which emits flammable gas in contact with water.
Class 5 – Oxidising Substance, Organic Peroxide.
Class 6 – Toxic Substance, Infectious Substance
Class 7 – Radioactive Material
Class 8 – Corrosive Substance
Class 9 – Miscellaneous Dangerous Substances
Your business must have a Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor (DGSA) if dealing with dangerous goods on a regular basis. This is needed to comply with the Health & Safety at work act 1974.
The DGSA is responsible for monitoring safety measures, dealing with reports on any accidents and advising on the security aspects of transport. The DGSA must have passed a written exam and have a certificate to show they have received the correct training.
If you are a driver of a vehicle that carries dangerous goods you must attend an ADR training course which involved the following;
Making the driver aware of the hazards of al dangerous goods which they could be carrying.
Ways of reducing the likelihood of an accident.
Practical experience of what they would need to do if an incident does occur.
Courses are split into 4 modules –
Core – Everyone must sit the core module. This module covers everything from driver certificates to parking rules, security to loading.
Packages – Covering all information about packing dangerous goods and what labels to use, whether it be in an UN certified ox, IBC or drum.
Classes – Covering all information about all 9 classes.
Tanks – This is for all drivers looking to become a tanker driver. This module covers everything about road tanks including placarding, certification and road tanker components. This module is an add-on.
Drivers must sit a refresher course every 5 years.
This course can also count towards driver CPC hours.
