What is First Aid?
First Aid is the initial treatment given to someone who is injured or sick, prior to professional medical assistance arriving to take over from you. Whether at work, home or out and about our everyday lives it is essential that we all know how to assist someone who is sick or has been injured. Taking part on a first aid course does not make you a doctor or nurse but the skills you will learn could make a difference between life and death.
Things to discuss at the workplace –
- Is there an adequate number of first aiders and emergency first aiders in place for the amount of staff at your workplace?
- Do you have the appropriate equipment, kits and facilities available?
- Is there a system in place to report an incident or accident?
Questions you should ask yourself –
- If someone you are close to has a stroke or a heart attack and you cannot see that they are breathing, would you know what to do whilst you wait for an ambulance to come?
- If you were at work and another member of staff has a fall and is unconscious, do you put them in the recovery position? Do you know how to put someone in the recovery position? Will it make their injuries worse if you move them around?
- If you are at a family meal and someone starts choking, do you tap them on the back and give them some water? Do you go straight in with the abdominal thrusts? Do you know the correct way to perform abdominal thrusts?
If you are unsure of any of the above it is essential that you take part in a First Aid Course for the safety of yourself and others around you.
Also if you were involved in an incident and needed First Aid performing on yourself, do people around you at work or home know First Aid? Can they help you? If not, it is worth mentioning to them how important it really is and how you feel about it.
What knowledge will you gain?
On an Emergency First Aid Course you will learn about your responsibilities when dealing with an incident as it is paramount that the incident is dealt with confidently and safely.
You will learn the correct way to deal with many different injuries such as burns, scalds, wounds and bleeding, and will also be taught the correct way to perform CPR and how to use an AED ( an automatic external defibrillator). Other criteria you will cover are things like seizures, epilepsy, choking and shock.
We hope that you will never need to use the skills you will learn in a First Aid Course, but if you have the skills and knowledge then ultimately you could save somebody’s life.
We hold Nuco approved First Aid Courses – 1 Day Emergency at work and a 3 Day First Aid at Work.
